The Shiant Islands & Skye 2023 Route planningThe specified program is a guide. Changes due to the effects of weather, current and wind are possible. Flexibility is required for this trip. Day 1: ObanThe Tour to Skye and the Shiant Islands starts in Oban, a pleasant fishing town with many attractions. You are welcome on board at 6:00 PM and have the opportunity to meet the crew and the other guests. Around 19.00 there is a welcome dinner and we raise a glass to a wonderful journey. Day 2: RumToday we sail from Oban to Rum, one of the 4 “Small Isles”. This is an archipelago south of Skye. This beautiful island is filled to the brim with breathtaking views. An eccentric castle, diverse wildlife and deserted beaches make up the appeal of this undiscovered gem to the west of Scotland. Rum is arguably the most suitable destination of all the Scottish islands for a relief hike – mountain passes, waterfalls, valleys and beaches all pass by. Day 3: Loch DunveganAfter a delicious breakfast we sail to Loch Dunvegan. Loch Dunvegan is a beautiful, large loch on the west side of Skye and an ideal base for visiting the Shiants. At the end of the day we will anchor here near the famous Dunvegan Castle. Day 4 & 5: ShiantsToday we depart early from our anchorage and set sail for the Shiants, an isolated archipelago east of the Outer Hebrides. The Shiants consist of 3 islands; Garbh Eilean (Rugged Island), Eilean an Taighe (Island with House) and Eilean Mhuire (Island of the Virgin Mary). The name of the Shiants themselves can be traced back to Sacred or Enchanted Islands. The area around the Shiants is a hotspot for whales and several dolphin species. The Shiants themselves are one of the most important breeding grounds for seabirds in Europe, including 65,000 puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and the rare Arctic shearwater. The island itself is geologically very interesting. There are 110 meter high basalt cliffs and several Rock Arches on the islands. A book has been written about the history and life on the Shiants: Searoom. Day 5: PortreeToday we visit Portree. Portree is the largest village on the Isle of Skye, a colorful fishing village that attracts many visitors every year. In the afternoon there is time to explore the island on your own from here. Day 6: Loch NevisWe leave Skye and set course for Inverie, a small village in the beautiful but difficult to reach “Knoydart”. Although this is the mainland of Scotland, Inverie can only be reached by ship or via a 3 day walk. The hills around Inverie are full of large groups of Deer that often show themselves well. Inverie is also the location of the Old Forge, the UK’s most remote pub. Day 7: TobermoryAfter a good night’s sleep we sail on to Tobermory with its beautiful colored houses on the water and its famous whiskey distillery. In Tobermory you can visit the whiskey distillery where you can take a tour, the small Tobermory museum and the Marine Exhibition which focuses on the local waters and activities in the harbour. Day 8 : ObanVia the Shiants and Skye we have made a wonderful and adventurous journey through Scotland. After an extensive breakfast it is time to say goodbye. |
